Eurasier Don vom Isselbruch, Diary part 2 Diary 2: 4th to 6th month: |
||
| 15 May 2006 | Don is now four months old | |
|
|
16 May | With the puppy group consisting of the older ones, we
went downtown again and did a lot of interesting, new things,
including walking up and down a few steps.
Afterwards some of us still had a little time, and, as the weather was nice and warm, we let our puppies have some fun in a brook nearby ... Oh boy, does Don love water! Stairs: Ever since, Don not only walks up the stairs at home, but also down. Fortunately, he takes the steps with due caution, carefully and slowly. |
|
|
19-21 May | We travel to a Eurasier show of the Zuchtgemeinschaft
fuer Eurasier e.V. in Cuxhaven, Germany, with
Blikki and Don.
But we were only "spectators". |
| 23 May | Puppy school :-) And this time Don was really a "hand full" - the long trip over the weekend and the many phases during which Don had to remain leashed and was expected to stay calm, obviously now found their balance ... | |
| 26 May | ... once again puppy school - a joint walk through a busy town in the company of many young puppies was fun. Among a lot of other things, we took turns riding in an escalator :-) | |
| 27-28 May | A well deserved, relaxing weekend, but with rain, wind and showers | |
| 29 May | Heavy rainfall, luckily it got less during our games and fun lesson. But I still got drenched ... right after the lesson, during our short walk (taking Don for a pee) before we drove home ! Because the rain had started again, and it had poured cats and dogs ... | |
| 30 May | Puppy school with Don, and we were lucky this time and did not get wet | |
| 2 June | Here and then I now find one or the other small mark of little teeth on one of my shoes - but always only on a shoe I left in the hallway. All other shoes seem to be safe. So I no longer leave shoes in the hallway, or only when I am present and can make Don aware they are "taboo". | |

Pentecost Sunday,
4 June 20 weeks old |
Summer weather, ideal for a meeting for a ZG walk in
Daemmerwald near Wesel. Don met his breeder family again. His
momma Cher, grandma A-Pia and even his sister Dinah were there, too.
First Don played (and let off steam) with Bardo, a nine month old Eurasier. After that, Don preferred to play with his sister Dinah. Blikki let Don take up contact with the other dogs. Blikki herself preferred to stay close to me or my husband. During the walk, we passed the "Isselbruch" = Issel is a stream, and "Bruch" a kind of moorland. Don showed he lives up to his name, as he was magically drawn to the mud and water. Dinah and Don soon romped and rolled together in the black mud. On our way back to the restaurant, some of it had dried. Dinah, a typical girl, was almost all dry until she got back and it only took a short session with a towel and brush and she looked clean and tidy again. Don, on the other hand, needed a somewhat longer session - which does not sound surprising for a male, does it? In the restaurant, Don then snuggled and cuddled with his breeder family. Eurasiers are actually a reserved breed and like to keep their distance to strangers, but Don has been exposed to so many situations and people, he let everybody in this group cuddle him, including the waitress :-) |
| Ticks are now out and about and we find them here and there. After some hard thinking, I decide to use something that helps against them. I also try to avoid places, where ticks might be AND I brush and check my dogs after each walk. | ||
| 8 June | Puppy school with the younger group - once again in the woods | |
|
|
9 June | Hot temperatures: Blikki and Don snooze through the midday hours ... on one occassion, I actually leave them for a good three hours ... They hardly noticed, the heat made them so sleepy, they just slept through until I got back. |
|
|
10-11 June | More hot temperatures: We go for a walk in the woods,
and Blikki and Don find some water to splish and splash. Blikki only
got some muddy legs, but Don was half black with mud. At home, we
attach the garden hose to the water supply in the cellar. That way, we
can adjust the temperature of the water. My husband and I gently hose
down poor little Don. Our puddle duck Don, who even likes to run
through the garden sprinkler or tries to catch some water from there,
does not like being "garden hosed". But we give him no other
choice.
Afterwards, after drying him with two, three towels, we have a fluffy Don again! |
| 12 June | Games and fun in the woods - and it is hot outside. We get to know and practice more things to make a walk more interesting and versatile. | |
|
|
13 June | Don is now in the "older" puppy school group again... He no longer fits into the very young group. Boy, he sure is developing fast ! |
|
|
15 June | Don is now 5 months old. In the past weeks, Don
lost most of his milk teeth and the new ones grew in without problems.
During this teething time I gave him plenty of rawhide chews
and similar things. Blikki, of course, also got her share of
everything ... Today I noticed that one milktooth - a fang - had broken off. A small piece had stayed behind and sat tight. Today was not a regular working day and vets could only be reached in case of an emergency. Don did not seem to be bothered by this broken tooth, so I decided to go and see the vet tomorrow. |
|
|
16 June | The vet took a good look at the problem. Obviously, there seemed to be no danger that called for immediate action. She advised we should wait and see if the tooth would fall out all by itself. She told me I could assist this by carefully and gently "wiggling" the piece of tooth daily, as this would help to give the impulse to "loosen and fall out". But, if a milk tooth does not fall out all by itself, it will have to be pulled at some time and that can only be done with anaesthesia. As said, we wanted to try "wiggling" first, for the next few days. Don seems to be feeling good, he is lively, likes his food, eats, plays, etc. |

|
18 June | Family celebration ... in a Restaurant in the woods :-)
That way, we could easily go for a walk right after our long trip there. We were there quite early, which enabled us to find a strategically well positioned seat at the end of a long table. We thought Blikki and Don got more space and more peace and quiet that way. It was lovely to see relatives and friends again ... and Don and Blikki behaved wonderfully: They rested and slept through most of the celebration :-) Hardly anybody wanted to believe that Blikki and Don ! can be "thunderbolts". After the celebration, before we travelled home, we went for a short walk in the woods again. |
| 23 June | Today I saw the little piece of milk tooth had - finally - loosened and fell out. I even found it on the carpet. What a relief !!! | |
|
|
25 June | It is hot outside, very hot ... We look for a walk with some water ... |
|
|
26 and 27 June | In both dog school courses we got a special surprise: A
fun agility course, for both dogs and humans, consisting of funny
tasks that the humans had to master together with their dogs. That was
lots of fun :-)
In the picture above, we are waiting until it is our turn, while watching those that are just doing the fun agility course. Actually, we all used some of the waiting time for little exercises with ours dogs - but watching the fun agility course was half of the fun, too - as were - as you can see - the "breaks" with free play |
| Day to day routine ... and the weather is very, very hot
...
Our walks are therefore not very long. Depending on the time of the day, we look for some shade on our way. In the house, we prefer the coolest spots, too. |

|
|
15. Juli | Don is now 6 months old ... and has the same shoulder
height as Blikki. Well, males are usually somewhat larger than females
:-) Don is still growing and I am curious to which heights ... |
