In the life of a dog, the first 12, respectively 16 weeks, are very important:    for good imprinting, socialisation and bonding

Read along how we experienced this important stage with our Eurasier puppy dog Don

Diary 2:   4th to  6th month

Diary 3:   6 months to 1 year

Diary 4:   from 1 year onwards

Diary 5:   from 2 years onwards

Diary 1:   until the 4th month:

Of course we had turned to Christa Stuhr, who voluntarily does the Eurasier puppy referral service in our Eurasier Club, the Zuchtgemeinschaft fuer Eurasier e.V. We kept in close contact with her, until she could break the good news to us that a Eurasier litter had been born. Eurasier puppy Don vom Isselbruch, born in Gemany on January 15, 2006, stole our heart right from the start. His first few weeks with his breeder family are documented on the webpage of the Zuchtgemeinschaft für Eurasier e.V. , click on ZG Puppy Info, Eurasier Puppies 2006, D Litter vom Isselbruch

15 March 2006 We visited Don and the breeder family several times and with each visit we could build a stronger bond with him. We also enjoyed cuddling with his sister Dinah, his mom Cher and grandma A-Pia. After the vet had examined the puppies (and the mom), gave them their microchips and their first vaccination, and after the final inspection through one of the ZG breed inspectors had taken place, we could finally pick Don up on March 15 (a Wednesday evening). We sat in the living room at the breeders and played with the puppies Don and Dinah, mom Cher and grandma A-Pia. We would have loved to carry on like this, but - our own Eurasier female Blikki was waiting in the car - and, it was getting high time for us to take Don to his new home.

Our Eurasier female Blikki knew Cher and A-Pia from several ZG walks in the past. When Don and Dinah were 7 seven weeks old, Cher and A-Pia even allowed Blikki to carefully take up contact with Don and Dinah on neutral ground (see picture). Blikki was therefore not surprised to see Don get into our car. To ease any heartache and longing for his old home, a blanket that had accumulated lots of "homey smell" also came along. Our trip home was without any problems. After we arrived at our home, we went into the garden. It was already dark and Blikki helped Don find his way in his new surrounding. Then it was dinner time and after another round in the garden, we were all tired. Don slept at my side in the bedroom (on his blanket on the floor) all through the night.

16 March 2006 We designed Don's first complete day in his new home calm and quiet, maintaining the schedule and food he was used to at the breeders home. Blikki and I accompanied Don during his stepwise inspections of our home and garden. My first attempt to lure Don away from our home, showed me this was still too early. At least Don could be motivated to follow me with a loosely held leash directly outside of garden. Several play rounds in the garden with me and Blikki gave him sufficient exercise in fresh air, with a lot of time to cuddle, rest and sleep indoors inbetween. Don was happy when my husband came home from work in the evening.

Don already knows a lot:  He sits nicely while his collar is attached, he knows his name and will come when called (that is, if no other "pressing business" is on his mind - but "human" quickly learns to realize such situations and then just waits for a better occassion). When watched carefully, Don actually tells when he needs to go out. And puppies need to go out often ! Don also knows the word "NO" and reacts accordingly to it.

Now it is up to us to manifest the things Don already learned and to expand on new things to learn - playfully and by using dog language. Puppies love to learn! With lots of fun and lots of praise. But also with being consistent (a "No" is a "NO") and setting limits. In the next few weeks a few well chosen books are in my easy reach. All in all, Don is our fourth Eurasier, but these books are a welcome reminder and assist me while trying to do my best with bringing up a puppy. Especially the time until the 12th, and 16th week are so very important, as this is the time for imprinting, socialisation and bonding.

Our neighbours are happy with us and also want to cuddle and pat this cuddly little furball called Don.

17 to 19 March 2006

9 weeks old

Yippee - my husband could take a day of leave on this Friday and so we could enjoy a prolonged weekend together with Don and Blikki. We found a suitable path way out in the fields and drove there by car. Don was allowed off leash there. We walked slowly and only a short distance. Every now and then we called Don (when he was running to us anyway) and praised him with joy in our voice, with a cuddle and ... with a small treat. By the way: Blikki does not come too short - of course not! - she always gets a little bit more of everything :-) During our short walk, a jogger wanted to run by with his two dogs. We quickly gathered our two canines and put them on their leash. When the jogger noticed we had a puppy with us, he stopped and let his two dogs take up friendly contact with Blikki and Don. That was to my liking!

On Sunday afternoon we had friends come and visit. A puppy is like a magnet ... Blikki and Don showed our visitors how well they can play and romp in the living room. When we humans all sat at the table, Blikki and Don rested underneath ... and then slept. After our "German coffee and cake" we all went for a short walk together.

Apart from that, we kept this weekend calm and quiet again to make settling into his new home easier for Don. We also maintained the routine he was used to: playing, cuddling, eating, resting, walking, sleeping make good stepping stones for such a routine.

Don also showed us that he already has a few hobbies: He loves to dip his front paws into the water bowl. He also loves plants very much ... He decorates the garden and also the living room with them according to his own personal taste, preferably using such plants that still have wet earth clinging to them.

20 to 24 March 2006 In the mornings and afternoons I now take Blikki and Don for a short walk out on the fields whenever possible. Of course, Don not only wants to follow me but also Blikki, but Blikki is much quicker than he is. This is possibly one of the reasons why Don still looks more to me for guidance :-) After lunch and a rest, another play session takes place in the garden.

Blikki has already started training and educating Don. Now she also included the "taboo game": Blikki took a rawhide chew and let Don see it. Every time he wanted to take it, she held her head so high that he could not reach the chew. Sometimes Blikki would let him chew along, another time she would not. When she did not want Don to have the rawhide, she moved a short distance away from him. Don rolled towards her or carefully sneaked up on the ground to her, always waiting for his chance. To get this chew, Don tried pouncing on top of Blikki. Without success. Maybe pulling her tail will do the trick? Nope. Blikki even sometimes used her paw to ward off Don's attempts to reach the chew! (A show worth watching ... daily. Both apply a lot of thought into what they are doing and every now and then they come up with new ideas and tricks in this game!)

During our walks - or at our fence - we sometimes meet other dogs. Don is slowly getting to know his new world.

Dogloving children in the neighbourhood cannot resist coming by every so often. I allow them to cuddle and play with Don for a little while - under my supervision. Blikki is slowly warming up to these children, too, and she will now sometimes even let one or the other child pat her. The children know that Blikki has a "noble reserve" and that she sometimes does not want to be touched. Then she simply keeps a certain distance and the children have learned to respect that.

We make short trips in the car on a daily basis. As the weather is still cool, I feel okay to leave Blikki and Don in the car for a very short while - for just as long as it takes me to dash to the bakery and get a loaf of bread.

I started with short training intervals - following me (heel) and sit, having ears, paws, etc. checked. etc. - indoors and outdoors and I give lots of praise with my voice, and reward with a treat. During the next few weeks I repeat these short training sessions two, three times a day, whereby each training session never takes longer than five minutes (later ten minutes). Inbetween things Don already does well, I can start adding something new. We always do this with lots of fun and lots of praise. At the end I ask for something very easy, something I know Don can do well. That way I hope to maintain his joy in learning and the following romp and play (and cuddle) session will assist me in building up a close bond with Don. And playing and cuddling with a puppy is so much fun!

25 - 26 March 2006

10 weeks old

Weekend and it is high time for a shopping tour. My husband took over the job of being "Dog sitter". Apart from that we maintain the usual routine and in the evenings my husband joined the romp sessions.

27 March 2006 In the morning we went to the fields again. In the afternoon I took Blikki and Don for a longer car ride. For Blikki I had booked a course of "Games and Fun" in January, but, due to the snowy and icy weather, this course was postponed to March. I was allowed to bring Don along, too. There was usually somebody who could hold on to Don, so that Blikki and I could participate in some of the exercises. Don got plenty of cuddles from the humans and the dogs were all nice to him, too. He liked the play sessions inbetween. At the end of this course, both Blikki and Don were so tired that they slept in the car till we were back home. And this, even though I had to drive through heavy rain showers, hail, thunder and lightning. A beautiful rain bow set an end to this spectacular premature April weather and the sun finally came out again. At home, Blikki and Don carried on playing in our garden ...

28 March 2006 Today Don's puppy course started. A lesson that asked for a lot of attention from him. At times I kept Blikki in the car, other times I had her with me, but that did not really work well. Blikki did not understand that Don was in the center of attention now. Despite that, puppy class was a lot of fun and there were so many different things that Don (and I) learned and there is even more to learn in the future ... Blikki and Don slept in the car again during our trip home.

In the afternoon I was visited by a family interested in Eurasiers. Don seemed to sense we would be having visitors  - short before the visitors arrived, he decorated the small rug in the living room with plants he found outside ... Once the visitors were here, Blikki and Don stayed with us for a while, then they played in the garden, Don also played with the two children. But there had been so many new impressions during this day that Blikki and Don were soon tired and then took a long rest ...

29 March 2006 Today Don's breeders had announced they would like to come and visit us and bring Cher and A-Pia with them :-)

Don recognized his breeder family immediately. Greeting them took place outside on our terrace. It was so heart warming to see Don and his breeders so happy. Cuddling, patting, playing and taking pictures inbetween blended into one big activity. Blikki then also accepted Cher and A-Pia in our garden and our home. Another greeting session took place, this time Don with his four-legged mom and grandma. They happily romped and played in the garden.

Then we went into the living room and playing and cuddling continued on the carpet for a while.

While we humans sat down at the table for German "coffee and cake", all the dogs settled around the table on the floor and rested ...

Before the breeders left, another round of roughhousing took place in the garden.

Don did not have time to feel sorry for himself after his breeding family had left. Three girls from the neighbourhood had an appoinment with us. They had hoped to see Don's mom and grandma, but the girls were just as happy to cuddle and play with Don.  Don was really tired out that evening ...

30 March As is customary, Don received his first vaccinations while still at the breeders home. The follow up vaccinations are due in week 12. Before that, deworming should take place about a week earlier. I decided to take Blikki and Don (and their EU passport) along to discuss this with my vet or his assistants. I was lucky, the surgery was not too full so that the assistants also found time to cuddle a bit with Don. Even the vet took time to pat Don inbetween two other patients. Blikki did not want to be patted, but she showed interest and stayed calm. With that, Don's first visit to our vet was a positive experience. Blikki has often experienced that there is no reason to get upset about a visit to the vet.

31 March Blikki and Don received the usual amount of time and attention ... but I also had to do some shopping ... in stages I managed to get things done (first to the bakery, then a quick dash into the small supermarket around the corner, and then to the butcher ...)

After all, Blikki and Don are also hungry ... as you can see :-)

1 to 2 April

11 weeks old

Actually, I would have soooooooooo much loved to attend the Eurasier walk of the ZG in Hambruecken. Shortly before, it turned out I would have  to drive there all by myself, just with Blikki and Don. Hambruecken was just too far away for my liking to make such a trip with such a young puppy all on my own (just the thought of the many necessary stops already scared me) so that I gave up this thought early in the morning, 6 a.m., of the event... Sigh ...

I notice more and more that Blikki is expanding on her training methods with Don. On the way back from our walks, she "attacks" Don and rolls him in the ground. Over and over again. When he stands still and does not dare move on, she invites him to carry on with a play bow. Then she runs quickly in a big circle around him and starts all over again with her wild attacks ...

3 April I attend the "Games and Fun" course again with Blikki and Don. As I wanted to concentrate on a special lesson with Blikki, I tried to leave Don in the car for a short while, but this did not work (yet). Don wants to be with us and he finds means and ways of communicating this. "Staying alone in a well-known place" will therefore make up part of my training plan for Don in the next few weeks. It will also do him good if he and I do a few things together (without Blikki). I find it very helpful that I can discuss such things with this trainer of the course. She has plenty of good and helpful ideas. The course "Games and Fun" offers new ideas, too, and it is not only fun for the dogs, but also for us humans.

In the ZG Eurasier club we have a few "younger Eurasiers" at the moment. Here we also exchange hints and tips. It is also great fun listening to and  exchanging the most recent funny experiences ...

4 April Puppy school for Don. The weather was cold, but every now and then warm sun rays came through. I therefore did not want to leave Blikki in the car. Near the training area there was a tree stump to which I could attach Blikki with a long leash. I put a water bowl there for her, too. That way she could watch what Don and I were doing during puppy school. There were a few breaks during which the puppies could run free and play and during each of theses breaks I let Blikki free to play with them, too. But she preferred to stay at my side and watch how Don then mingled with all the puppy folk.

Don played more during this lesson than the last time. This time he preferred to play with puppies that were more his size and age (although size normally does not matter much to dogs. "Small dogs" often know how they can command respect in the dog world!). On our way home Blikki and Don slept again, deep and sound. At home we had lunch, and then a long round of roughhousing in the garden and - finally - a rest ...

After our walk in the late afternoon, two boys from the neighbourhood played with Don in our garden. I stayed with them for light supervision. A lady from the neighbourhood also came by with her elderly dachshound and we (Blikki and I) had a nice chat with them over the fence. After dinnertime both Blikki and Don were bushed. For once, I could find some time to do a bit of computer work.

5 April We maintained our usual routine. During the morning rest I actually managed to get the German diary and the pictures online.

6 April Again, we kept to our routine. In the afternoon, the boy from nextdoor wanted to come along. Don now seems fit to make a slightly bigger round. Part of the way, Blikki and Don can run free, but part of the new way asks for us to put the dogs on their leash. The boy from next door did all this with Don. Thanks to the neighbour boy, our first bigger outing "on leash" worked much, much better than I had expected.

7. April This morning the telephone rang ... and ... guess who visited us about two hours later! A visitor from Canada !!! What a wonderful, small world! I was really happy Josee found time to stop by for a short chat, despite her busy schedule.

Apart from a good free run and some play time, our afternoon walk included a large part on the leash for Don again, and he did so well. According to the instructions of our trainer, I did not tell Don to "heel" and did not make him stay that close. Don never pulled, simply followed me or was a little in front, always with a loose leash.

8. - 9. April

12 weeks old

Weekend, and a BIG shopping tour was due again to stock up on FOOD. I also wanted to get a few flowers for the garden, after all, it is SPRING. My husband jumped in as a "dog sitter" again. Before taking Blikki and Don for their walk, I quickly dashed into the post office, leaving both Blikki and Don in the car (windows and roof opened a tiny bit for cooling and some fresh air). Don is getting used to this.

Our next puppy training session is planned to take place in the town of Bad Münstereifel. So far, I have not "done" much "down town", and so, to prepare Don for this, I walked Blikki and Don up and down a not so busy shopping street. Don did really well. I also noticed that walking with such a cute little furball at your side draws some attention !

10 April In the morning we went to the vet and Don received a check up and his follow up vaccinations. For the first time, I took Don all on his own. He stayed calm all through our car trip. Walking from the parking place to the vet's was also no problem, and even at the vet's, Don was very compliant. Don scrambled on the scales when told, sat nice and still and let the vet do everything neccessary. Only checking the teeth was a bit of a struggle, as my puppy did not want to open his mouth and show his gorgeous crocodile milkteeth. I wanted to assist, but, the vet knew a trick or two to get Don to comply after all.

On our way back home, I made a short stop at the flower shop to get another spring plant (Guess why !? Correct, my little "decorator" had his own ideas over the weekend). I left Don in the car for that short moment.  This went so well that I had the courage to go and get a fresh bread as well. When we came home, I left Don in the car again to just quickly deposit the plant in a safe place first, but this was asking TOO much. Don protested. (Okay, I admit, he saw we were home and he probably wanted to see Blikki, now, too). I did not open the car as long as he was still protesting, as I did not want to reward that behaviour. I told Don "No" and gave him the hand signal to "sit". He calmed down, and then sat. Then I opened the door and carried him out of the car.

We were told that the vaccinations could make Don a bit sleepy and that he might even feel some discomfort. Sure enough, our little puppy whined a bit in the afternoon and so I did not take Blikki and Don for the "Games and Fun" course. We simply spent a calm day at home and in the garden, resting, cuddling, playing, and lateron a short walk helped to distract Don a bit.

11. April Country boy goes to town: Don was born out in the country, with wide fields right next to his home. And, all our walks so far have been in the fields. It was high time for some "town business" now and I was very grateful this was on the agenda of the puppy group. Our group met at a large parking place. In the back, there was a space where the dogs could run free and play a bit before our "work" began. Then we put our puppies back on their leads and slowly walked along a main road into the gorgeous town of Bad Münstereifel. We took turns zigzagging around little obstacles, made several stops, did tiny training sessions in the middle of the lively town (and had many observers!), took turns sitting down on a bench and making our dog sit at our feet, tied our puppy to a post and left him for a few paces (coming back in time before a dog could voice any protest), and gave lots of praise , etc. For the moment, Don is the youngest puppy in the group, and our trainer again told me not to ask for a "heel" yet, to simply have Don tag along without tiring him out. Don did so well, he did not pull once, and nothing spooked him. Cars and trucks passed us, people of all kinds and ages - with sticks, with child buggies, etc - passed us, and all this seemed natural for Don. Some people actually addressed me personally to ask more about Don and what breed he was, and I could hear many others commenting things like: "Look at that little one, he's like a ball of wool". In the middle of the town we all stopped and looked up at a window: One of our members has a gorgeous young Great Dane female, called Coconut. Her older two Great Danes, Angi and Aragorn, were both at that window, looking out together, then detected us and looked down at us with great curiosity. What a lovely picture! She allowed me to publish that photo here, also the one from our tour in the town. This was such a lovely day with the puppy group in Bad Münstereifel .

On our way home, Don had to stay in the car for a moment again as I needed to pop into the bakery. No problem. At home, Don and Blikki got their lunch, and had a long play session in the garden. Then Don was bushed. In the afternoon, I had an appointment with a family with children who were interested in meeting some Eurasiers and learning more about them. Blikki and Don came to the door to greet them and once we were all settled in the living room, I gave every child tiny pieces of treats they could give to Blikki and Don. Don was so tired from our morning that he soon fell asleep and slept through most of the time our visitors were here. Short before they wanted to leave, Don slowly woke up. We all went into the garden, where the children could enjoy a small play session with Don - using his fluffy and tug toys so that they had a "buffer" from his crocodile milkteeth.

12. April I look forward to my cuddling session every morning with Don. After breakfast, and after my husband has left the house, Blikki likes to sneak away and have a catnap in a quiet area of the house. Don and I then lie in the living room on a rug, play and cuddle for quite some time ... until he, too, gets sleepy. Then I can sneak away and do some work. When Blikki and Don are awake again, I let them in the garden (with free access into the house), until we head off for our first walk ...

Don still likes to decorate with flowers, and so I have to get a new flower every now and then. But, Blikki has been tattle-taling on Don! Whenever she comes to me without Don, I know there's something fishy and sure enough, Don usually just got hold of a spring flower. Blikki is a big help in trying to stop this flowery hobby becoming one of Don's obsessions ...

14. - 17. April

Happy Easter !!!

We can enjoy a few days all together again :-)

Of course Don wanted to take a "close up look" at the Easter flowers that I had put outside for decoration. I therefore decided to make the flowers "taboo": I introduced each little flower pot one by one to Don and told him this flower pot was "NO". In addition, while we were having a photo session with him and the flowers to make a few nice Easter photos, we kept Don under close supervision (and control). This not only resulted in a few lovely Easter photos, but also: Ever since Don has not touched one flower !!!

Remark: How a grown dog - male or female - makes things "taboo" for puppies, was once observed by Eberhard Trumler. He described many such observations in his books and films, and such observations from canine experts (Mead, Zimen, Bloch, Paquet, Coppinger, etc.) help us to understand dog language and find adequate ways of dealing with certain situations - by applying appropriate dog language.

18. April - 21 April During puppy school we had lovely weather. A few agility elements accompanied us all through and this was fun for the dogs - and us humans. The dogs also enjoyed the free play sessions. For us humans it is always very interesting to watch the dogs and their interactions during these play sessions. There is so much to see and to learn that way.

I maintained our daily little training sessions and managed to include new things, too. A lot became necessary during normal, every day life. Instead of "heel", which would not YET be done correctly, I say "With". "With", "Sit", "Come" and "Down" are done reliably by Don. "On your side" is also very practical as it enables me to check his paws and tummy and/or brush his tummy. We have also used "Stand", "Path" (stay on the path), "Go on", "Stop", "Quick, quick" during our walks on the lead, but these things still need more practice before I can start using them without a lead. "Back" has also been applied (otherwise the door to the garden will not open) ... etc., etc. "Sit" and then having to wait while I take a few steps away from Don is still a bit difficult. Don wants to follow me then. We will keep practising :-) Whenever applicable, I also use hand signals together with the word.

Sunshine and warmer temperatures made it necessary to start leaving Don and Blikki in the house while I had a few errands to run. Waiting in the car would have been too hot. By now, we have found a regular daily routine, with set times for resting periods. I use these rest periods to run my errands. I assume that both Blikki and Don sleep while I am gone and while they are alone in the house. Every time I came back, everything was still where it was before I left, well, maybe one toy was somewheres else. Don sometimes snatched one of my hiking shoes. The shoe is still intact, and Don only seems to snuggle up to it. I can put up with that. Some books on dog training recommend to give a dog an old pullover with your scent when you leave him on his own. Instead of a pullover, Don gets my shoe ...

I can slowly expand our walks: We start off by foot from our home, on the lead, and explore the neighbourhood a little, before we get to the fields and acres right next to our living quarters. There, Blikki and Don can run free a bit. All in all, these walks should still be rather short, as the ligaments, tendons and muscles of a young dog have to build up in the first year. Voluntary free play on a meadow or grass is preferred.

22.-23.April

14 weeks old

For the first time in his life, Don made acquaintance with an electrical mower and grass trimmer. That was no problem at all. At first, Blikki and Don wanted to distract me from mowing, but then they saw I was determined to get the grass cut. They then retreated to the terrace, from where they watched me a while. Soon they were playing again :-) Washing machine, tumble dryer, steam iron, etc., etc., have all been introduced to Don at his breeders home.

The grass was cut, and our weekend could begin. Although quite a few things had accumulated that were waiting to be done, my husband found time to accompany us on our walks. We enjoyed the lovely, warm weather and the precious time together. In the Photo Gallery you can find a few pictures as a result :-)

24. - 28. April Monday was somehow a difficult day for me, and unfortunately I did not make it to the fun and games course. A day later we had beautiful sunshine, and the puppy school took place during a walk in the woods. The various learning goals were achieved along the way. It is so good to see with how much enthusiasm both dogs and humans participate. This puppy school is really fun and the lady who does it, has wonderful ideas.

The rest of the week was "business as usual". We kept to our routine with our daily little walks, a car ride every now and then, and our daily little training sessions. During the resting periods, I left Blikki and Don on their own in the house for about an hour or even an hour and a half. Some things just could not be postponed any longer and needed to be done. It was good to experience I can leave Blikki and Don on their own for such a time span.

During the week I also had plenty of time to play and cuddle with both Blikki and Don. Blikki and Don are often inseparably rolled together in a ball playing, and actually roll in front of our feet every now and then. But, a few occasions arise during which my husband and I can usually play and cuddle with just one of the dogs. This is important, too.

Up to now, the weather had been mostly dry during the evenings, and so our door to the terrace was mostly open while I cooked. Blikki and Don could go in and out as they pleased. Last week we had rain, and the dogs were inside while I was cooking. Suddenly I noticed that Don left the kitchen as soon as I switched on an electrical appliance that removes kitchen odours ... ( I must admit, that appliance even gets on my own nerves, but loud as it is, it does help to get the kitchen odours out fairly quickly). So far, I had not noticed this behaviour of Don, which was no wonder - after all, Blikki and Don were usually outside while I was cooking. So now that I knew, I first turned the appliance off. Then I lured Don into the kitchen and gave him a few treats. For a very short while, I switched the appliance on again, during which I gave Don the most delicious treats I had. The next evening I repeated this a few times, keeping the appliance on for a bit longer each time. This method worked. After two, three days, Don now comes close to this loud and noisy appliance again.

By the way, since Easter, Don has not plucked or stolen any flowers anymore :-)

Travelling in Time

29.-30. April

15 weeks old

This weekend we had typical April weather. On Saturday morning it even hailed while we were out for our little walk. Socialisation was on our agenda this weekend, and we all went to Euskirchen, where a special town party took place. We parked high up in a parking house and I carried Don up and down the many stairs. While strolling through the inner city, Blikki and Don both behaved wonderfully - they walked calmly through large gatherings with people, passed loud live music bands, passed children jumping on a large trampolin, etc., nothing bothered our two. We were even allowed to take them with us into a shop with outdoor clothing. People looked with smiles on their faces at our two and every now and then we had to stop and answer a few questions concerning this breed of dog.

A note about stairs: We were determined to not let Don walk any stairs with many steps during his first year. But already during the first few days he was with us, he attempted to climb UP the stairway. Per day we never let him do this more than once or highest twice. Luckily, he still does not (yet) feel courageous enough to walk DOWN the stairs. I rather carry him, up and down.

And finally I got to see the famous man with a barrel organ. He had been so kind to lend us his chapeau for the front page of this homepage. Experiencing this man wearing his chapeau and playing the barrel organ, was really a special treat, and having Don with us, made it even more special. This man has a really beautiful nostalgic barrel organ that can play so many wonderful songs. Great!!!

On Sunday we took Blikki and Don with us to an open-air museum in Kommern, where one can travel back in time: Freilichtmuseum Kommern. One can take well-behaved dogs along, but may not take them into the buildings that are exhibited. It was very interesting and we plan to go there more often. We walked from one building group to the next and took turns looking inside each old building, while one of us was always outside with the dogs. We were so lucky with the weather, the sun came through despite the many dark clouds.

1. May 2006 We did our usual little walk again. In the afternoon my husband could accompany us to the course "games and fun" for Blikki. While Blikki and I participated in the various lessons during which a lot of new things were introduced, my husband had a little agility parcours all to himself and Don. After that, he and Don went for a little walk in the nearby woods, until Blikki and I were finished. The weather was not so nice that day: Heavy rain came down and we all got wet. But, true dog lovers do not care about bad weather, they have the right clothes for such outings. It really is nice to come back to a warm and dry home, though!

2. to - 5. May 2006 Puppy course for Don was a lot of fun again. As always, there were many new inspirations for us. Don is warming up and, during the short recesses inbetween the lessons, he now plays much more with the other dogs, who are all a few weeks older than he is. This course consists of ten sessions, and it will end soon. Meanwhile another group slowly formed. It will consist of dogs around Don's age and a little younger. We will continue with that group, and I am looking forward to it.

Now we had warm temperatures. On Friday we got a special treat: The trainer of the new puppy course was looking for a few owners with puppies who were willing to participate in an "extra lesson" for a special occasion. 8 to 10 puppies, aged 12 to 16 weeks, met in the afternoon and - much to our delight - were allowed to play free in a large living room first. Then we all went into the forest for that special lesson. For such joyful occassions we will gladly act as "statists" again :-)

6./7. May 2006

16 weeks old

With such lovely weather, we now see cows, sheep and horses out on the meadows. Don has met riders on their horses during our walks, but a whole herd on a meadow is new to him. Blikki knows all this and she reacts calmly and quietly when a herd comes towards us. I praise her for her good reaction, and Don follows Blikki's example.

The Eifel in Germany offers a lot of places worth sightseeing. On Sunday, my husband took us to see the Kakus-caves near Eiserfey. One can imagine a group of stoneage people living in this cave system, and really: there are stoneage findings to back this!

Between 300 and 50 before Christ celts lived in this cave system.

It was fun to explore the cave inside and outside. Blikki and Don enjoyed this adventure, too.

On our way home, we made a stop at the "Roman Water Storage Room" near Kallmuth. This is one of the many documents from Roman times in the Eifel. This very well restored and documented water storage room describes the beginning of the Roman water pipes in the Eifel, which were 95,4 km long ...

  9. May 2006 Puppy school was interesting again. Among other things, first steps towards using the nose were attempted, in a playful way.

12. May 2006 Our new puppy course with the younger puppies took place and was fun. We played and cuddled ... and learned a lot, of course!

13. May Blikki has been on heat for some time now, so she stays at home with my husband, while Don and I attend the ZG Eurasier meeting in Reichshof, see website ZG, Events 2006, Impressions, Reichshof

See picture: Don met his grandfather there! He also had a lot of fun playing with other young Eurasiers such as a young Eurasier female named Chiara

14. May Don and I went to the ZG Eurasier meeting in Kirrlach, see ZG website, Events 2006, Impressions, Kirrlach

Here Don met his other grandmother and he found many, many Eurasiers to play with !

I was especially happy to meet 12 year old Arwen again and her family again.

15 May DON is now four months old
